From the distillery: The Macallan 1861 has been created as a replica of an original Macallan, distilled in 1861 and bottled by John McWilliam, wine merchant of Craigellachie. The bottle, labels, nose and flavour of the whisky mirror the original as closely as possible.
Distillery Background: The Macallan Distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, who had farmed the land around Easter Elchies for some years as a tenant of the Earl of Seafield. James Priest and James Davidson purchased the Macallan Distillery in 1847, but their partnership was dissolved in 1851. From this we know that the 1841 was bottled between 6 and 10 years old.
