Any entry in the annual Diageo Special Release series is always highly coveted, but none more so than this beauty from the gone but not forgotten Port Ellen. This 12th Release was distilled way back in 1979 and matured for 32 years in American and European oak casks, bottled as a 52.5% time capsule that collectors clamber to get their hands on. Port Ellen Distillery ceased production in 1983. This whisky is part of the Diageo Rare Malts Series, and it is one of the final releases from the distillery’s remaining casks, making it a prized find for whisky collectors and connoisseurs alike.

about the distillery
Port Ellen Distillery is a legendary Scotch whisky distillery located on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. It was established in 1825 by the McGill family and quickly became one of the most renowned distilleries on the island, famous for its peated whisky production. Port Ellen is particularly celebrated for its rich, smoky flavor profile, which is typical of many Islay whiskies, with a distinctive peatiness and maritime character. Even though the distillery is no longer in operation, bottles of Port Ellen whisky continue to fetch high prices on the secondary market due to their rarity. They are often considered collectors' items and some of the bottlings released by Diageo (the current owner) from Port Ellen's casks are highly sought after.
