About This Whisky

🥃 Mortlach 23 Year Old 1972 – Rare Malts Selection – 75cl, 59.4% ABV

A Bold, Powerful Speyside Icon from the Golden Age of Distilling

The Mortlach 23 Year Old 1972, bottled in the late 1990s as part of the now-discontinued Rare Malts Selection, is a high-strength, full-bodied Speyside single malt from one of Scotland’s most enigmatic distilleries. Distilled in 1972 and aged for 23 years, this vintage expression was bottled at a formidable 59.4% natural cask strength, showcasing the raw, muscular character that Mortlach is revered for.

Often described as "The Beast of Dufftown," Mortlach is famed for its rich, meaty style—created through a unique 2.81 distillation process. This Rare Malts bottling is a stunning example of that signature complexity, making it a must-have for whisky collectors, enthusiasts, and investors.

🏰 About Mortlach & the Rare Malts Selection

Mortlach Distillery, founded in 1823 in Dufftown, Speyside, has long been known for producing one of the most robust and savoury single malts in Scotland. Its signature distillation technique creates an exceptionally weighty and structured whisky—unlike anything else in the region.

This 1972 vintage was released under Diageo’s now-iconic Rare Malts Selection, a range of limited-edition, cask-strength releases from both active and silent distilleries. These bottles are now highly collectable, with the 1972 Mortlach among the most powerful and respected in the series.

About Mortlach

Mortlach Distillery

Mortlach is located in the heart of Speyside, near the town of Dufftown in the northeast of Scotland. It sits amidst a region renowned for whisky production, with many of the world’s most famous distilleries nearby.
Mortlach was founded in 1823 by James Fleming, and it has been producing whisky continuously since then, making it one of the oldest operating distilleries in Speyside.
The name Mortlach is derived from the Gaelic words “Mòr” (big) and “Lach” (lake), possibly referring to the nearby stream or river.
Mortlach has had several ownership changes throughout its history. It was originally independent but was later bought by various companies over the years, including The Distillers Company Limited (DCL), and eventually became part of Diageo when DCL merged into it. Despite these ownership shifts, Mortlach has maintained a distinct identity, with a loyal following of whisky aficionados.
