About This Whisky
🥃 Brora 24 Year Old 1977 – Rare Malts Selection – 70cl, 56.1% ABV
An Ultra-Rare Highland Masterpiece from a Legendary Closed Distillery
The Brora 24 Year Old 1977, bottled in 2001 as part of Diageo’s historic Rare Malts Selection, is one of the most revered expressions from the now-silent Brora Distillery. Distilled in 1977, just six years before the distillery's closure in 1983, this Highland single malt was aged for 24 years and bottled at a bold 56.1% natural cask strength.
This release captures the distinctive smoky, waxy, coastal character that made Brora a cult favourite and one of the most sought-after names in collectable Scotch whisky. Powerful yet refined, it’s a prime example of the golden age of distillation.
🔍 Tasting Notes – Brora 1977 24 Year Old Rare Malts
-
Appearance: Rich gold with amber glints
-
Nose: Deeply expressive. Notes of waxed leather, heather smoke, sea air, engine oil, and antique oak. Earthy peat layered with dried citrus peel and wild herbs.
-
Palate: Robust and full-bodied. The peat smoke is balanced by complex flavours of salted caramel, roasted malt, dry spice, and medicinal oils. A splash of water unlocks hints of honeycomb, beeswax, and mineral-rich earth.
-
Finish: Exceptionally long, with fading smoke, coastal salt, and waxy spice lingering on the palate.
🏰 The Legacy of Brora & the Rare Malts Selection
Brora Distillery, located in the Scottish Highlands, was mothballed in 1983 and remained closed for nearly four decades. During that time, it gained legendary status for producing lightly peated, richly textured whiskies—often described as more austere than its Islay cousins.
The Rare Malts Selection, released by Diageo between the mid-1990s and early 2000s, showcased some of the finest cask strength whiskies from now-closed or rare distilleries. Among them, the Brora 1977 24-Year-Old remains a standout release, prized for its power, elegance, and increasing rarity.
