About Craigellachie

Craigellachie Distillery

Craigellachie is the rock at the heart of Speyside, was founded in 1891 at the peak of the Whisky boom. Two years later, it was incorporated as a limited company and in 1896 it was reconstructed as Craigellachie-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd. In 1998, it was sold to John Dewar & Sons then in March 1998, Diageo sold John Dewar & Sons to Bacardi.

Craigellachie’s distillery, however, was only built in 1890. Designed by Charles Doig, it was built with all modern conveniences with the express intention of making a lighter fruitier character than the older distilleries – one of the earliest descriptors of Craigellachie mentions pineapple as a desireable aroma.

Craigellachie revels in its sulphurous nature. The first thing you smell as you enter the distillery is the notes of cabbage and beef stock. This is rising from the worm tubs which sit at the back of the distillery. It is the small amount of copper contained within them that helps to promote this character. They also add weight to the palate of the mature spirit.

Known For: Robust spirit and long-aged expressions

Craigellachie Whisky Style & Flavour Profile

Craigellachie single malts are instantly recognisable for their weight and intensity, typically offering:

Rich malt and cereal notes

Meaty, savoury undertones

Sulphur and struck-match complexity

Tropical fruit (pineapple, banana)

Honey and toffee sweetness

Firm oak spice

Long, powerful finish

This distinctive style makes Craigellachie particularly well-suited to long maturation, where its bold spirit softens and deepens with age.

Production & Maturation

Craigellachie’s character is shaped by:

Worm tub condensers, preserving heavier spirit compounds

Traditional copper pot stills

Long maturation in refill American oak casks, allowing the spirit to shine

Occasional sherry and specialty cask influences

These methods produce whiskies of exceptional depth and individuality.

Why Whisky Enthusiasts Value Craigellachie

One of Speyside’s most distinctive flavour profiles

Retains traditional worm tub production

Excellent performance in older age statements

Highly regarded by independent bottlers

Increasing recognition among collectors.
