Whisky gift sets and tasting sets

A tasting set is a safe gift for someone who likes whisky when you don't know their favourite: they try several and find their own. For a dad or partner who drinks Scotch, the 10 malts tasting box covers smoky, coastal, fruity and rich styles in one box.

For a 40th, 50th or 60th birthday, 21 Drams or the Premium 10 malts box feel like an occasion. If they already have a favourite style, pick the three-dram pack for it: Islay for smoky whisky, the Highlands, the Islands or Japanese whisky.

Most of our sets use 3cl miniatures. 3cl is 30ml, a little more than a standard 25ml UK pub measure, so there's enough to taste each whisky properly. The Festive Sherry Vault uses larger 20cl bottles.

Every set comes with tasting notes, so you know what each dram is and what to look for. Our sets range from three drams to twenty-one, and three of them include a glass.

• Use a tulip-shaped glass such as a Glencairn. It gathers the aroma so you can nose the whisky properly.
• Start with the lightest dram and finish with the smokiest or strongest.
• Nose before you sip, then take a small sip and let it sit on your tongue.
• Try a few drops of water. It often opens up the flavour, especially in stronger whisky.
• Keep water and plain crackers to hand between drams, and use the tasting notes to compare what you find.
