Founded in 1908 by Spanish immigrant Don José Varela Blanco, the distillery started as a sugar mill called Ingenio San Isidro. Varela Hermanos produces around one million cases of rum per year. They also produce gin and vodka. Varela Hermanos controls the entire rum-making process, from growing and harvesting the sugar cane to distilling and aging the rum. Varela Hermanos is one of the few distilleries that still uses molasses produced from estate-grown cane. They press the cane sugar essence directly from hand-cut cane. The distillery is located in a valley on the Azuero Peninsula, near the town of Pesé, which is known for its sugarcane cultivation. Varela Hermanos produces award-winning aged rums such as Ron Abuelo, as well as Seco Herrerano, the national drink of Panama.
