About This Whisky

Port Ellen 28 Year Old 1979 – 7th Release (2007) | Rare Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (70cl, 53.8% ABV)

The Port Ellen 28 Year Old 1979 – 7th Release is an exceptionally rare Islay single malt whisky, distilled in 1979 at the now-silent Port Ellen distillery and bottled in 2007 as part of Diageo’s highly acclaimed Special Releases series. With just 5,274 bottles released globally, this is a sought-after expression among serious collectors, whisky investors, and fans of closed distillery Scotch.

Matured for nearly three decades in refill American oak casks and bottled at natural cask strength (53.8% ABV), this 70cl release captures the essence of Port Ellen’s maritime, peaty style. Expect a beautifully layered palate of smoky brine, lemon zest, light tar, and oak spice, balanced by refined complexity and a long, lingering finish.

A benchmark expression for those seeking a vintage Islay single malt with historical significance, the Port Ellen 28 Year Old 1979 is an ideal addition to premium collections.

About Port Ellen

Port Ellen Distillery is a legendary Scotch whisky distillery located on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. It was established in 1825 by the McGill family and quickly became one of the most renowned distilleries on the island, famous for its peated whisky production. Port Ellen is particularly celebrated for its rich, smoky flavor profile, which is typical of many Islay whiskies, with a distinctive peatiness and maritime character.
Even though the distillery is no longer in operation, bottles of Port Ellen whisky continue to fetch high prices on the secondary market due to their rarity. They are often considered collectors' items and some of the bottlings released by Diageo (the current owner) from Port Ellen's casks are highly sought after.
