About Glendronach

Glendronach Distillery

James Allardice founded the distillery in 1826 and the Glendronach was one of the first licenced distillery's in Scotland. The Glendronach distillery was purchased by Teachers and Sons Ltd around 1960 who increased the number of stills from two to six. In 1920 Captain Charles Grant, son of the founder Glenfiddich purchased Glendronach. The distillery still uses traditional production methods, including the practise of "floor malting" and firing its stills with coal until the 2000's. Glendronachis best known for its use of Spanish sherry casks, oloroso and pedro ximenez (PX), which gives its whisky a rich, fruity and robust character. In 1996 the distillery was temporarily closed and reopened again in 2002 by Allied Distillers Limited. It was later sold to BenRiach Distillery company in 2008, leading to a major revival of the brand. The name Glendronach derives from the Scottish Gaelic Gleann Dronach which means "valley of the brambles".
