Rare Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Limited Edition Diageo Special Release

The Port Ellen 29 Year Old 1978 – 8th Release is one of the most coveted bottlings from the legendary closed Islay distillery, Port Ellen. Released as part of Diageo’s 2008 Special Releases, this expression is the 8th in a series of ultra-limited annual releases drawn from dwindling stocks of this historic distillery, which ceased production in 1983.

Distilled in 1978 and bottled at a natural cask strength of 52.5% ABV, this 70cl bottle delivers the unmistakable Port Ellen profile: elegant peat smoke, salty maritime character, and layered notes of oak, citrus peel, brine, and leather. Aged for 29 years in refill American oak casks, this rare whisky offers depth, power, and refined complexity — a true gem for collectors and connoisseurs.

Highly collectible and globally sought-after, the Port Ellen 1978 8th Release is ideal for whisky investors and serious Islay lovers in the USA, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, and beyond.

About Port Ellen

Port Ellen Distillery is a legendary Scotch whisky distillery located on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. It was established in 1825 by the McGill family and quickly became one of the most renowned distilleries on the island, famous for its peated whisky production. Port Ellen is particularly celebrated for its rich, smoky flavor profile, which is typical of many Islay whiskies, with a distinctive peatiness and maritime character.
Even though the distillery is no longer in operation, bottles of Port Ellen whisky continue to fetch high prices on the secondary market due to their rarity. They are often considered collectors' items and some of the bottlings released by Diageo (the current owner) from Port Ellen's casks are highly sought after.
