About Jura Distillery

Jura Distillery

Jura Distillery

Jura Distillery is a renowned Scotch whisky distillery located on the remote Isle of Jura, just off the west coast of Scotland. Known for producing distinctive Island single malt Scotch whisky, the distillery is celebrated for its smooth, lightly peated style and strong connection to the rugged maritime environment of the island.

Location

Jura Distillery sits in the small village of Craighouse, the only village on the Isle of Jura. The island itself is sparsely populated and famous for its wild landscapes, dramatic coastline, and strong whisky heritage.

History

Founded: 1810 (modern distillery rebuilt in 1963)

The original distillery was established in the early 19th century but later fell silent.

It was revived in 1963 by local landowners and villagers to help sustain the island’s economy and community.

Today, the distillery is owned by Whyte & Mackay, part of the Emperador Group.

Whisky Style

Jura whisky is known for its balanced, approachable flavour profile, often featuring:

Honey and caramel sweetness

Orchard fruit and citrus

Subtle maritime influence

Gentle peat smoke (depending on the expression)

While most Jura whiskies are lightly peated or unpeated, the distillery occasionally produces heavily peated releases.

Production

Jura Distillery is notable for its tall stills, among the tallest in Scotland. These tall stills contribute to the whisky’s lighter, smoother spirit character.

Popular Jura Whisky Expressions

Some of the most well-known releases include:

Jura 10 Year Old – the core expression, smooth and honeyed

Jura 12 Year Old – sherry cask influence with richer fruit notes

Jura 18 Year Old – deeper complexity with tropical fruit and spice

Jura 21 Year Old Tide – part of the Rare & Limited series

Jura Seven Wood – matured in seven different oak casks

Interesting Fact

The Isle of Jura has around 200 residents but thousands of red deer, giving the island a unique wild character that influences the identity and branding of Jura whisky.
